Starting a Craft Distillery in Ontario

Starting a Craft Distillery in Ontario

In this series of starting a craft distillery in Ontario, we are going to talk about the very basics of what you need to know prior to jumping in. First off though, congratulations  on making the decision to pursue the Craft Distillery realm. Secondly, we love that you came across this post!

When deciding to get into this realm you need to understand that there are several key aspects to consider when jumping in. First off is are you cut out to be an entrepreneur. This means doing your research, studying your market and making sure you are very aware of the field that you are getting into.

Then there is the business plan. This is crucial, you need to have a very detailed plan on how you are going to reach your goals/achieve certain tasks and stay on track. Yes, this may seem boring and at times very redundant but knowing when you are hitting your targets or when you are needing to pivot is crucial.

During your business plan write, you will need to outline how you are going to obtain licencing for your facility. Where you will have your distillery set up, who you are going to sell to and among other things who is going to design your equipment. Ideally you should look to a distillery that you have in your area that you see as a success. Learn from them, I am sure they will be more than willing to discuss where they had their pitfalls and where the successes are.

As you journey further through the process, educating yourself on the spirit(s) that you are going to make is important as well. Everyone can say “I am going to make a Canadian Whisky”. Only few can say they are going to make a good Canadian Whisky. This is largely due to the education piece. You can find forums online saying what your ingredient list needs to be, if you source grain from certain areas what certain moisture percentages within those grains can be. Cook times are important and yeast is also important. Make sure you figure out this piece. Do not fall into the weekend warrior courses where they claim they will educate you on how to be a master distiller in that period of time. A lot of courses are offered some good, some not just be careful when choosing one. Remember at the end of the day it is all up to you and researching and experimenting is key (although we are not suggesting hobby distilling at all or any other illegal actions).

Our View at the Habitat WR Golf Tournament

Our View at the Habitat WR Golf Tournament

From Habitat website:

20 years is a lot of golf.  But that’s also a lot of building homes, hope and communities for a lot of hard-working, low-income families in Waterloo Region.  Can you believe that this is our 20th anniversary golf tournament?  I’d say that’s quite a legacy, and we are asking you to keep building our legacy.  Join us this year (for our tenth year in a row) at Rebel Creek Golf Club for 18 holes of golf on gorgeous greens, over 30 impressive items on our silent auction and tons of prizes.  I mean, 20th anniversary only comes around once.  This is going to be our best year yet!

MORE #BEER at our #habitatwrgolf tourney. We 💗🍺… and @descendantsbeer who’s been supporting this tourney for years.
